Members of the Green Team keep local communal areas tidy and collect recyclable waste from their communities. Specifically, 2l cold drink bottles, chip packets, plastic wrappers, bottle tops, and other inorganic materials that can be put into an ecobrick (including cigarette butts). To date they have contained over 1,500,000 cigarette butts! Ecobricks can be used to improve public spaces cost-effectively.
The Green Team also upcycle various types of waste into new saleable products that are sold to raise further funds for community development. Many of the team that upcycle the waste are disabled.
This project is managed by grassroots NGOs: Overstrand Unite, Overstrand Association of People with Disabilities, and Overberg Wheelchair Association.
