Humane Humans
Being born and raised in an Apartheid state makes a person acutely aware of differences and, for many people, judgmental as hell. For others, it has catalyzed extreme empathy and a passionate determination to right the wrongs.
The Most Unequal Nation in the World
Despite South Africa being a democracy for 3o years, not much has changed. It is still the most unequal nation in the world. Many areas of South Africa are still spatially segregated. We are supposed to be a ‘Rainbow Nation’, but the truth is that people of different races and cultures don’t mix and don’t know that much about one another.
The majority of the white population cannot even speak an African language, yet they claim to be Africans. And no, Afrikaans does not count. White settlers still own the majority of land. The majority of the people, native to South Africa, are yet to enjoy the economic freedom promised to them in 1994.
What is the point of being free to vote and having freedom of movement if you can’t afford to go anywhere?
The worst thing about all this is that despite South Africans generally being warmhearted people, there are still far too many who are intolerant of others and, sadly, even downright racist.
From Horror to Hope
Witnessing the horrific genocide happening in Palestine and the West’s response to it has shown that it isn’t just South Africa that is suffering from intolerance and racism.
What it has also revealed is that across the globe humane humans are standing with Palestine despite structural and institutional conservatism.
It shows that the majority of human beings do embrace diversity, are humane, and do still have hope for humanity.

Diversity is the heartbeat of humanity. Only by embracing and celebrating our differences, can we unlock the full potential of our collective human spirit and pave the way for a more innovative, inclusive, and prosperous future.
